MacBook Pro + New HDD = clokey fun!

October 28th, 2009

Today I was let loose on my girlfriends MacBook. I’m a PC and don’t often get to play with her Mac, let alone do a Hard Drive upgrade. Nice, easy, Warranty Voiding procedure – I just followed the instructions here – http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2119528,00.asp

The hardware change was quite easy, and reinstalling OS X was also simple (if not time consuming). After a fresh install of the OS we used the Migration tool to import all of the settings/applications/files from her old drive. Just attached the drive using a USB kit – simples.

I’m impressed that my girlfriend trusted me with a screwdriver near her Mac.

After we confirmed everything transferred and worked correctly my girlfriend upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard. Another hour lost to installation but worked well, and everything appears to work.

My concerns were with her licensed products like Microsoft Office (Mac:Office), and Final Cut. Final Cut being the main cause for a HDD upgrade, as Live Type font sets taking up more than 10gb on her original 80gb drive (reported as 74gb)

Now she has plenty of free space, and seems happy with her new improved Mac – not forgetting to mention that both her MacBook and my Vaio laptop had memory upgrades (up to their maximum allowed 2gb RAM).

Looking forward to my HDD upgrade tomorrow (I’m surviving on 40gb split between Windows XP and Kubuntu 9.04).

Kubuntu 9.10 is arriving tomorrow also.

Running late?

June 8th, 2009

My girlfriend and I noticed today that everyone else is allowed to be late. We found this out whilst calling to advise our lateness to an appointment.

We were told “We’ll note it on the appointment and he’ll decide if he can still see you”

This is in an establishment that is renowned for being significantly late on appointments, without any explanation. This, however, makes no difference to them and are willing to sacrifice an appointment.

This also happens elsewhere. Things have changed but at one point you had to wait up to 28 days for delivery on many mail order items, but you have to pay straight away. If the item was later than 28 days, you just had to wait longer or kick up such a fuss that you would get 0.001% off of your next purchase – but if you paid late, you would probably see 3 letters chasing you for payment and pursuing legal action.

And again if you are 5 minutes late for work, or returning from a lunch break you’ll get the third degree from your manager – yet you could be waiting for a year for your ‘monthly’ appraisal.

Anyone else got some examples of where the ‘waiting’  priorities change depending on your perspectives??

No Tea and Coffee making facilities

June 3rd, 2009

So I find myself writing a post whilst in my hotel room in London. A two day training course takes me away from my normal home, and away from my girlfriend :-(

While I am here I decided to take a trip down Baker Street and look at all of the lovely restaurants. I then made my selection and walked out with a Big Tasty (oh yes, McDonalds).

But back on topic…

MY HOTEL ROOM HAS NO KETTLE!!!

  • No Tea
  • No Coffee
  • No little biscuit packet
  • No annoying little UHT milk cartons

In short, I am not happy!!

It’s strange because when I am home I may drink 1-2 cups of tea in a month. But a hotel room needs Tea and Coffee making facilities.

[This also makes reference to Bill Bailey's DVD back story of hotel locations - although I haven't video'd it]

Updates are available

August 12th, 2008

Why is it when you are without the internet for even the shortest amount of time, things update around you.

It does not feel like a short amount of time, but I sure missed the internet. Once connected my PC wanted updates, I signed in to the site today and -YEAH- Wordpress requires updates.

So you, the reader, also need an update.

It’s my house now. Yes I am a homeowner.

I am also very lucky to have my girlfriend living with me.

She cooks, cleans, irons and all that jazz – well, ok, that was a lie – but she is awesome and does her fair share of the work in the house.

Lets get this stuff updated shall we…

Keep up people – I don’t!!!

No girlfriend – I’m single again (Hellooo ladies???)

Car – Well I’m driving in Dad’s Peugeot 306 TD which is leaking power steering fluid; it gets me to work and back…!

I applied for an internal job at EDF – doing some number crunching!! :-0 but I didn’t get it…

It’s ok I can sit at home and stare at two – not one – but two dead xbox 360’s – I will call Microsoft one day…

I may put up some useful FAQ’s on maintaining a PC but that is only if I can be bothered. Too much effort – Too little reward….

Ciao for now
