Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

November 1st, 2009

My Sony Vaio Laptop is getting on a bit. So I’m sure it felt better after having a new HDD and a fresh install of an OS.

My OS of choice, not Windows, Kubuntu!

Part of the Ubuntu project, Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) was released this week. Being a Linux OS means that it has some major differences compared with Windows. You can do the same things in Ubuntu that you can in Windows, but to begin with it doesn’t seem right. Being a Windows user since 3.1 at school, and my first PC running Windows 98SE, Linux and Kubuntu definitely took a little getting used to. Thankfully you can try Ubuntu, or Kubuntu by running a Live CD.

Visit www.ubuntu.com to Download the Live CD.

Back to my Vaio – The HDD swap was easy (unlike changing one in a MacBook Pro) and I was straight to running the Live CD. During the step-by-step installation it partitions the drive for you, or you can do this manually. My 120gb drive is partitioned into 3.

  1. / (root) – 20gb : This is where the OS goes, doesn’t need much space and after the install still over 15gb free.
  2. swap – 2.1gb : This is like windows swap file, I have 2gb of RAM so need at least that so I can Hibernate.
  3. /home – 98gb : This is like the “My Documents” folder on steroids. All user accounts sit in here with all of the preferences as well. If you need to reinstall the OS, all of your preferences and files are separate.

Job done, Kubuntu installed. Nvidia drivers installed. Google Chrome (Linux Development build) installed.

Wordpress post, complete.

Walking just became a Geek’s Sport

June 3rd, 2008

Well my mobile phone is fixed, and it was returned to me with update firmware and stuff.

Within ’stuff’ was the updated version of Nokia Sports Tracker. This application uses the inbuilt GPS receiver in my Nokia N95 to record a sporting activity.

After selecting an activity such as ‘Walking’ or ‘Running’ it will then begin to track your movements, recording your location (including altitude) and current speed.

The service is then expanded with the ability to send the finished activity to Google Earth (as a *.KML) or to Nokia Sports Tracker Website (BETA : sportstracker.nokia.com). This can be seen in the following example;

Walking from Dawlish Warren to Dawlish (to the car!!)

Three friends and I walked from Dawlish to Dawlish Warren, and then back again; A nice walk in the nice weather.

Using my mobile phone I recorded the return trip using the Sports Tracker; The walk can be viewed here: http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/workoutdetail/index.do?id=220376, or you can download the Google Earth location data here: 01_06_2008_5_32_pm.kml

Spitchwick: Ideal location

May 9th, 2008

Living in the South West definitely has its advantages, one of these is quick access to Dartmoor National Park.

The moors are rather breath-taking especially if you are from a city, running the rat race every day. The location I visited recently was Spitchwick (Map>). Running along the River Dart it beautifully opens out into a nice grassy area, ideal for picnics/BBQ’s (Not sure if it is legal to have a BBQ) and small sporting events. The river bends around a corner at this spot leaving a very deep area to dive into from nearby rocks (I’m not that brave!!). When I visited (Tuesday and Wednesday night) I just took pictures!!

Recommended area to visit, but it gets very busy in the summer. It’s quite nice in a full moon, but don’t go alone, it’s a long walk to anywhere if you break down!!
