Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

November 1st, 2009

My Sony Vaio Laptop is getting on a bit. So I’m sure it felt better after having a new HDD and a fresh install of an OS.

My OS of choice, not Windows, Kubuntu!

Part of the Ubuntu project, Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) was released this week. Being a Linux OS means that it has some major differences compared with Windows. You can do the same things in Ubuntu that you can in Windows, but to begin with it doesn’t seem right. Being a Windows user since 3.1 at school, and my first PC running Windows 98SE, Linux and Kubuntu definitely took a little getting used to. Thankfully you can try Ubuntu, or Kubuntu by running a Live CD.

Visit www.ubuntu.com to Download the Live CD.

Back to my Vaio – The HDD swap was easy (unlike changing one in a MacBook Pro) and I was straight to running the Live CD. During the step-by-step installation it partitions the drive for you, or you can do this manually. My 120gb drive is partitioned into 3.

  1. / (root) – 20gb : This is where the OS goes, doesn’t need much space and after the install still over 15gb free.
  2. swap – 2.1gb : This is like windows swap file, I have 2gb of RAM so need at least that so I can Hibernate.
  3. /home – 98gb : This is like the “My Documents” folder on steroids. All user accounts sit in here with all of the preferences as well. If you need to reinstall the OS, all of your preferences and files are separate.

Job done, Kubuntu installed. Nvidia drivers installed. Google Chrome (Linux Development build) installed.

Wordpress post, complete.

Cars – do they need all four wheels?

May 10th, 2008

My brakes needed changing… or so I thought!?!

Upon removing my wheel, and removing the brake drum I realised the brakes are fine. The bearing however was shot!!

The bearing, for those who are still guessing, is what allows the wheel to spin freely on its center. It sits dead center and shouldn’t allow the wheel to wobble. The wheel wobbled, a lot and made some nasty noises.

So I didn’t need new brakes, I needed a new bearing!

£25 later a new bearing; but me and my dad couldn’t install it as the old one wouldn’t come out. We almost had to buy a whole new drum. All because of a small circlip, designed to hold the bearing in place. My dad and I had to waste an entire afternoon trying differing methods of removing a small bit of metal.

Bristol International Airport

April 4th, 2008

It really is something to look at 6:45 in the morning… in the fog… in the cold… through tired eyes.

Just did a friend a favour and drove him to the airport this morning. It’s gonna leave me kind of tired but I knew today was going to be long. I’m now about to work my 9-5 job at Landmark, go home, nap, andd then go out for my Grandads birthday. I don’t know how old he is this year, nor have I got him a card – but he’ll understand.

Why? because I have been to Bristol!! (see above);

I’m tempted to organise a spontaneous trip to London to see someone – if the hotel prices are right, and if the car survives the journey…

The the day begin continue

I took some funky test when applying for a job a short while ago.

I just found the results and thought that I would post them…
